Stretching Towards the Span

Exploring presence through vivid color and light. This acrylic piece captures the intrigue of long, cast shadows and the striking geometry of a brilliant yellow bridge against a teal sky.

Vibrant acrylic painting on A3 paper depicting a bright yellow bridge stretching across a blue body of water. In the foreground, a long, exaggerated dark shadow of a person is cast across a tan and brown walkway under a deep teal sky.

The Interplay of Light and Form

In this acrylic study on paper, the focus shifts from the internal to the external environment, captured through a lens of heightened color and dramatic light. The piece is anchored by two opposing forces: the solid, architectural weight of a vibrant yellow bridge and the ephemeral, elongated shadow of the observer.

Heightened Reality

The colors in this work were intentionally pushed beyond the natural palette to reflect a sensory intrigue with the surroundings.

  • The Vivid Span: The bridge is rendered in a saturated yellow that slices through the composition, creating a bold diagonal that draws the eye toward the horizon.
  • The Teal Firmament: By using a deep teal for the sky, the warmth of the walkway and the bridge is intensified, making the entire scene feel as though it exists in a dreamlike "golden hour."
  • The Elongated Shadow: The central inspiration, the long shadow, serves as a marker of the artist's presence. It stretches forward, thin and reaching, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation in a loud, colorful world.

Technique & Medium

Painted with acrylic on A3 paper, the work utilizes broad, confident strokes to define the landscape. The contrast between the dark underbelly of the bridge and the sun-drenched walkway highlights the physical depth of the location while emphasizing the flat, graphic quality of the shadows.

"I was intrigued by the long shadows I casted and I gave the image more vivid colors to capture that moment of heightened awareness."
