The artist

Johan Kohlin is a visual artist based in Jönköping, Sweden, whose work stands as a testament to resilience, presence, and the profound shift in perspective that follows a life-altering event.

Johan’s artistic journey did not begin in a classroom or a traditional studio, but rather out of necessity and a deep sensory awakening. Following a severe accident that fundamentally changed his reality, he turned to painting as a vital tool for internal processing. This pivotal moment brought with it a profound humility toward life, an emotion that deeply saturates his canvas and guides his creative intuition. For Johan, art became the medium through which a rearranged world could be explored, structured, and ultimately understood.

Style & Philosophy

Style & Philosophy

Entirely self-taught and driven by an experimental approach, Johan refuses to be confined by a single stylistic lane. Instead, his portfolio navigates a compelling duality between raw emotional expression and crisp, deliberate structure:

Intuitive Expressionism: In his highly textured, atmospheric works, Johan uses bold, layered applications of paint to map internal transitions. These pieces often grapple with heavy shadows, capturing the exact, electric thresholds where darkness breaks and gives way to light, recovery, and a sense of abundance.

Graphic Minimalism: Conversely, Johan explores the external world through clean, hard-edged architectural studies. Inspired by geometric form and minimalist photography, these paintings focus heavily on negative space, crisp lines, and the quiet beauty found in everyday, low-angle perspectives.

Across both styles runs a common thread: a fascination with the relationship between human structures and the restoring forces of the natural world, alongside a conscious decision to look up and find beauty from the ground.

Never stand still

Approach & Medium

Working primarily with acrylics on canvas and watercolor, Johan’s process is deeply tactile and evolutionary. Unbound by formal training, he approaches the canvas with a rare freedom by allowing the paint to be built up, scraped back, and layered according to the immediate demands of the narrative. Every piece is an active practice in being present, an exploration of curiosity, and a reminder that even when existence feels entirely upended, the perspective gained can be beautiful.

Johan lives and creates in Jönköping, continuously expanding his practice and exploring new directions through the lens of a life fully and humbly lived.
